So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up this profession as a passionate hobby. They collect and evaluate loose diamonds or loose gemstones. You'll even find some that like to travel to different areas close by or even taking a trip to other countries to look for raw gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you then read along as we discuss the in and outs of gemstone collecting.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to know everything there is to know about your new hobby. The more you understand about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You'll know exactly what to buy.

First on your list to take into account will be stone color. You'll want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. We are talking about violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. In general terms, the prices of very dark are very pale stones are lower.

The cut of the gemstone is the next factor to look at. The precision of cut determines the amount of light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and its final value.

The next factor to look at is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This refers to the gemstones purity with no internal conclusions, internal particles or spots inside the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Next item to look at is the duo of weight and size. Because gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Collecting gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is such a variety when it comes to gemstones. You could try collecting Diamond, Ruby or Kornerupine for example. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if money is tight you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Just in the United States in Texas You can find Beryl, Pearl and Tourmaline.
