So You Want To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well for one thing they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many in this hobby love to collect and work with each and every one of the 150 varieties available. This article will look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

To start off right you need to read up on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from making mistakes. This will help you make informed decisions.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gemstones are so related to color that they have even lent their names to specific colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher they closer they are to natural spectral colors of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They are valued much less the farther they are from the pure spectral color.

The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits when you consider a gemstone's value. The stone has to be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A gemstone with the poor cut will not reflect light consistently over its entire surface. Color saturation, color hue and color tone will always look inconsistent.

Our next consideration is the clarity of the gemstone. Clarity refers to the internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of a stone. Any large flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with others needing to be magnified 10X

Next on the agenda is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite would be about 1.23 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people loved to spend weekends to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Nevada you can hunt for Rock Crystal, Citrine, Nevada Turquoise and Virgin Valley Black Fire Opal. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or look in the garnet fields in Harts Range in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Starting The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology as a hobby. They collect and evaluate loose gemstones or loose diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit different areas nearby to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If you have an interest in this hobby then follow along as this article discusses the various factors in gemstone collecting.

The first step in becoming a gemstone collector the wise way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a look in your local bookstore you can find everything you need to know that will prevent you from making mistakes at the start.

Number one to look at is the color of the gemstone. Highly prized gemstones exhibit colors similar to the purest spectral colors of violent, blue, green,, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or too dark lowers the value per carat.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors into appraisal of diamonds but along with your gemstones. A precision cut gemstone showcases the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One excellent way to determine the excellence of gemstone cut is to consider how well and consistent it reflects light throughout its surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside. Gem color appears washed out.

Next to look at is the clarity of the gemstone. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of the gemstone. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size aspect since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but have different carat weights that result in different in prices as well. This is due to the difference of specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can be very enjoyable and rewarding in the long run. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting gemstones. For example in Oregon you'll find Agate, Obsidian, Hydrolite and Sunstone. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Torrington, New South Wales, Australia or hunt in the garnet fields in Fullarton River in Queensland, Australia.

Citrine is one of November's birthstones and is a beautiful yellow stone. It is
a popular less expensive alternative to the much more expensive yellow sapphire
or yellow diamond. To create wondeful multi-colored jwelry, it is often combined
with other stones such as: peridot, amethyst, and garnet.

Aquamarine often becomes paler if left out in the sun. Keep this gemstone in a
cool dry place. Aquamarine is usually heat treated and sometimes irradiated to
enhance color and clarity. Reputable dealers will not use the following
misleading terms. However, for your protection, I am listing them here: "
Brazilian Aquamarine" is really Blue Topaz. "Siam Aquamarine" is really heat-
treated Blue Zircon. "Mass Aqua" is blue glass.
