How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up this profession more as a hobby. They collect and evaluate loose gemstones or loose diamonds. A number of these hobbyists start to travel to various areas nearby to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you then follow along as we show you the in and outs of gemstone collecting.

First off you'll need the knowledge on each of the gemstones out there. This knowledge will help you to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from making mistakes. This will help you make informed decisions.

The chief thing you need to take into account is the color of the gemstone. You want the gemstone that is as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. We are talking about orange, red, violet, green, yellow, and blue. The prices for very pale or very dark semiprecious and precious gemstones are lower in value.

The cut of the gemstone is one of the most important traits in determining gemstone value. The cut has to be done correctly to reflect light properly. A stone that has a poor cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. The color hue, color tone and saturation will never be consistent.

Another factor to look at is the clarity of the gemstone under consideration. This means the gemstones purity or the lack of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal structure. Without a doubt, zero flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Next comes weight and size. Except for corals and pearls, all gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. However you should know weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. Take a diamond that is 1.00 carats in weight and you will find that a similar sized ruby or sapphire weighs 1.20 carats.

Collecting gemstones can be a great hobby. And there is such a variety when it comes to gemstones. You can start collecting gemstones like Garnet, Tanzanite and other varieties of zoisite or Zircon for instance. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if money is tight you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Just in the United States in Idaho you'll find Garnet, Opal, Agate, Obsidian and Sapphire.

Tips On purchase loose diamonds

Historically the finest sapphire gems came from Sri Lanka and Burma, and the
same is prettymuch true today. Sri Lanka, nicknamed the "Gem Island," has been
an important source of sapphires, rubies and other gemstones for more than two
thousand years. The stones that have been eroded from Sri Lanka's central
mountains are still plucked by hand from gravel deposits that cover most of the
southern half of the island. Sapphires from Sri Lanka are typically light to
medium blue, and gemstones have been cut that weigh up to several hundred carats
. The National Gem Collection boasts one of the largest fine blue sapphire gems,
the 422.99-carat Logan Sapphire from Sri Lanka. It is the heaviest mounted gem
in the National Gem Collection, and is framed in a brooch setting surrounded by
twenty round brilliant-cut diamonds, totalling 16 carats. The piece was a gift
to the Smithsonian Insitute from Mrs. John A. Logan in 1960.
